No Stallions over WEANLING AGE may be shown by a youth, 18 years & under!

Halter Classes Attire as Showbill States:

Foal Halter: Must be foaled in the current calendar year of the show. The foal may be horse or pony, of any breed & of any sex. The exhibitor may be of any age. Foal halter shall be Judged, 60% on confirmation, & 40% on the way of going.

Yearling: Must have been foaled the year preceding the show date. Horse or pony of any breed or sex. Judged 60% confirmation & 40% on the way of going.

2 Year Old: Must be 2 the current calendar year of show. Any breed, horse, or pony, of any sex. Judged 60%  confirmation, & 40% way of going.

Western Horse: Horse of any western type of breed. Horse may be shown by any age exhibitor. Horse may be of any age, sex, or breed. Judged 60% confirmation, & 40% way of going. Horse is 14.1 & over.

Color Breed: Is a horse or pony of a color breed assoc. Pinto, Paint, Creme, White, Buckskin, Appaloosa, Palomino, POA. May be of any sex, or age. Must be eligible to register in a color breed registry. may be shown either English or Western halter with exhibitor of any age dressed accordingly. 60% confirmation , 40 % on way of going.

Open Showmanship at Halter: Exhibitor may be any age, & May either show horse or pony. Exhibitors must be in proper attire, according to the breed of the animal being shown. Each horse & exhibitor will be observed separately by the Judge, & then shall be judged in the class. This class will be judged on the showmanship of the exhibitor, & how they present their horse or pony.

Pleasure & Performance Classes - Attire as Showbill States

1. Judge will be looking for a sound well mannered horse on a reasonably loose rein, good execution of true gaits, and an appropriate way of moving. All junior horses (horses 5 years & under) may be ridden with a bosal or snaffle bit with two hands on the reins in all pleasure classes, except, for Horsemanship .

2. All horses and/ or ponies in all pleasure classes must be worked at a walk, trot, and a lope both ways of the ring, back & stand quietly in a lineup.

3. Judges may not call a horse or pony in from the rail at a lope, or ask for a reverse at a lope.

4. Riders will not be asked to dismount in a class, other than Horsemanship.

Pleasure - Attire as Showbill States

 

Jr. Horse: Open to horse or pony 5 years & under. Proof of age required if questioned. Horse may be of any sex, age or, breed. Exhibitor can be of any age.

Sr. Horse: Open to horse or pony 6 years & older. Horse may be of any sex, breed. Exhibitor may be of any age.

Color Breed: Same requirements as color breed halter. Open to Horse, or Pony of any sex or any breed. Exhibitor can be of any age.

Optional Gait: This class is open to horses or ponies, & of any age exhibitor. Walk & favorite gait required. Riding with a saddle is optional. The class will be Judged on smoothness & comfort of the optional gait.

Open Horsemanship: All exhibitors must have the opportunity to work any pattern as well as on the rail. If a pattern is to be used, it must be posted before break. The pattern shall be the same for all riders. Rail work should include a walk, trot & lope, both ways of the arena. If a pattern is used, at the Judges discretion, the Judge, may work the horse only 1 way of the arena, & back-up. The Judge shall not ask riders to change horses, nor ask riders to reverse at a lope. The exhibitors may be asked to dismount & remount. This class is to be judged on the equitation of the rider. Exhibitors may be of any age, & may show a horse, or pony of any breed, age, mare, or gelding.

Mens Pleasure: This class is open to riders 19 years & older, on horse of any age, sex, or breed. May be ridden in

Ladies Pleasure: Same as Mens Pleasure.

Adult Exhibitor must be 19 years of age or older.

Walk-Trot: On a horse, of any breed, age, or sex. Exhibitor will be asked to walk & trot both ways of the arena. Back & stand quietly at the discretion of the judge. The judge shall not ask for a lope in this class.

Youth Classes Attire as Showbill states:

Youth exhibitors age for the showing shall be determined as of January 1st of the current year. Exhibitors in youth classes should be dressed in proper attire, whether showing in English or Western tack. Youth showing in western attire would be properly dressed in boots, pants, shirt, & hat. Vests, coats, & chaps are optional. No chaps or spurs should be worn in Western halter classes. Proof of youth riders must be shown if questioned.

Open Pony Halter: Pony must be under 14.1, led by an exhibitor 14 years of age & under. Pony can be of any breed or age, mare or gelding. Judged 60% on confirmation & 40% on way of going. All ponies are to be measured before showing in MWHA approved classes. See #11 in Rules Regarding Exhibitors.

Leadline Equitation: Exhibitors must be 6 years & under, & on Horse or Pony. No Stallions Allowed. The person leading must be 14 years of age or older, but does not have to be the same person at every show. Points are on the rider only. A lead line shall be attached to the bridle or bit. No contestant in lead line will be allowed to be tied, buckled, or fastened in the saddle in any manner. Exhibitors will be required to walk both ways of the arena & stop. This class shall be judged on the Equitation of the rider, & Not the Size or Shape of the Horse or Pony.

Walk-Trot Equitation: The exhibitor must be 8 years of age & under, & pony must be under 14.1. No Stallions Allowed. No contestant in walk-trot will be allowed to be tied, buckled, or fastened in the saddle. Exhibitors will be required to walk and trot both ways of the arena and stop. The exhibitor may be asked to back his/her pony. The judge shall not ask for a lope in this class. This class is judged on the Equitation of the rider. ( It is Strongly recommended that the Total arena be used!)

Pony Pleasure: This class is open to exhibitors 14 years & under, & pony will be under 14.1, of any breed, age, mare, or gelding. The requirements are the same as for the pleasure classes.

Youth Western Pleasure: This class is open to horses 14.1 & over, exhibited by youth 18 years & under. The horse shall be required to walk, trot, & lope both ways of the arena. Back & stand quietly at the discretion of the Judge. The rider shall not be asked to dismount. Youth Exhibitors must be 18 years & under, & may show a horse or pony, of any breed, age, mare or gelding.

Youth Walk-Trot: Exhibitor shall be asked to walk & trot both ways of the arena. Back & stand quietly at the discretion of the Judge. Rider shall not be asked to dismount & remount. The judge shall not ask for a lope in this class.

Novice Youth Walk-Trot: Same requirement as Youth Walk-Trot with the Exception of: Novice is defined as someone whom has not won a 1st in any performance class, previous to that show. Youth Novice Walk-Trot & Leadline exception.

Huntseat Pleasure

Huntseat horses are to be shown at a walk, trot, & canter both ways of the arena, back & stand quietly at the discretion of the Judge. The judge may ask for an extended trot & / or hand gallop. Horses are asked to reverse to the inside. They may be required to reverse at a walk, or trot, at the judges discretion, but shall not be asked to reverse at a canter. Horses must be brought to a flat footed walk before changing gaits. Light contact with the horses mouth is recommended. The walk shall be a true flat & footed walk for the pleasure class. The trot should be a brisk, smart, and cadenced without loss of form or smoothness. Extreme speed shall be penalized. The canter shall be smooth, collected & straight on both leads, with the ability to push on if required in a hand gallop. The hand gallop should be a brisk gallop with horses under control, after which horses will pull up ( not a sliding stop) & stand quietly on the rail.

Exhibitors in Huntseat Pleasure should be dressed neatly in suitable attire, consisting of hunt jacket, breeches, & English boots. Hard-hats are required. A stock, tie, or choker is also required. Gloves are optional. All colors shall be acceptable, but traditional colors are preferred.

Bridles shall be regulation snaffle. Kimberwick, or Pelham, all with leather browbands, & caesons. Others are prohibited. Double or single reins are optional. Saddles shall be hunting saddles of English or forward seat types. They may have suede seat & suede insert on the skirt. Either leather, web, or linen girths are permitted. Boots of any kind on the horse are prohibited, as are draw reins, rowelled spurs, dropped nosebands, & martingales of any type. Crops, English breast plate, unrowelled spurs, & braiding of the mane & tail in hunt style are optional.

Contest Classes:

1. The judge will observe the contest classes being run. In case of a questionable run his decision will be final, in accordance with our rules.

2. The committee for MWHA approved shows shall set up the contest patterns according to the size of the arena, in a way to make it safe for all horses & riders running.

3. When a pattern is being run & the Electric eye fails, the exhibitor may run again providing that the 1st run was a qualifying run, & providing that he has made an effort to run the pattern correctly & with care. The rerun time will be taken.

4. When an electric timer fails to work the first time a horse is run, the second time the horse runs, two stop watches must be used. If the timer fails on the 2nd run, the time of the watches will be accepted.

5. Clubs are responsible for supplying their own barrels & poles.

6. Exhibitors shall wear long pants, shirt & boots. Hats are Not Mandatory. Horses should be ridden with saddles, for the safety of the rider. Whips, bats, & spurs are allowed. There will be no hitting in front of the throat latch area in any of the contest classes. There shall be no excessive use of whips, bats, or spurs.

7. The exhibitors number must be worn & visible on either the horse or the rider.

8. Midwest approved contest classes may be run with either an open or closed gate. It is the decision of the show committee whether or not the gate should be closed. If the show committee has no preference, it shall be the riders decision whether or not the gate shall be left open or closed.

9. Youth may ride in both open & youth classes.

Individual Class Requirements:

Open Barrels: This class is open to horses or ponies, of any age, sex, or breed. Riders may be of any age. 3 empty 50-55 gallon drums should be used. Anything else is excluded. Knocking over a barrel is an added 5 seconds to the time, & breaking the pattern is an automatic disqualification. It is permissible for the rider to touch the barrels, but steadying the barrel is prohibited. Time begins when the horses head reaches the starting point.

Youth Barrels: Class will be the same as Open Barrels, except riders shall be 18 years of age & under, on horse or pony, mare or gelding.

Pony Barrels: Class will be the same as Open Barrels, except Rider must be 14 yrs of age & under, & riding a pony under 14.1, mare or gelding. ** 1999 Change to include: If a pony barrel class is offered, and is stated horse or pony, points will be given to MWHA members that ride their ponies. If showbill includes an 8 & under Pony class, rider may ride in both classes, if 8 & under, low placing points will be dropped.

Ladies Barrels: Class will be the same as Open Barrels, except the rider must be a female, of any age.

Mens Barrels: Class will be the same as Open Barrels, except the rider must be a male, of any age.

Open Poles: This Class is Open to horses, or ponies, of any age, sex or breed. Rider may be of any gender, & age. Six poles shall be used, approximately six feet tall. The distance between the six poles is to be measured with a tape measure & is to be 21 feet between poles. The poles must have a base not to exceed 14-16 inches in diameter, or 2 1/2 inches in height. The entry line shall be 21 feet from the first pole. It is not permissible for a rider to touch a pole, or steadying a pole is prohibited. A 5 second penalty will be added per pole knocked down. Breaking the pattern is a disqualification. An extra pole should be available in case of damage to a pole.

Youth Poles: Same as Open Poles, exception, youth rider must be 18 years of age & under, on horse or pony,mare or gelding

Pony Poles: Same as Open Poles, exception, youth rider must be 14 years of age or under, on pony under 14.1, mare or gelding ** 1999 Change to include: If a pony pole class is offered, and is stated horse or pony, points will be given to MWHA members that ride their ponies. If showbill includes an 8 & under Pony class, rider may ride in both classes, if 8 & under, low placing points will be dropped.

Dash for Cash / Plug Race: This is open to horse or pony, rider of any age. Pattern is in and out around 1 barrel, with fastest time winning. 5 second penalty for knocking over barrel. No Time for broken pattern.

Flags: Pattern is to the outside of barrels.  No Time for Missing pick up or stick of flag.  The flag is not to be used as a whip.
